Not what I expected

Dear friend

I've not been doing much game development lately, and for justifiable reasons (at least, to me).

The Problem

The reasons are also the problem.

  1. I lack original ideas of a game that I would find myself heavily interested in programming. I see other games coming out, and my only reaction is “This game is amazing. Why couldn't I have come up with that?” and it's extremely disappointing. The truth is, I've never really been good at game ideas. All I want to do is fiddle with code, see what is possible, learn something new, experiment some more et cetera ad infinitum insert more Latin here.

  2. The majority of my time seems to be taken up by website development commissions. Don't get me wrong. PHP is a good scripting language and I enjoy using it, but web design and back-end web development isn't really where I planned on ending up. It may be good for a quick buck, but… I don't know. I don't get the same thrill, the same satisfaction, and the same sense of achievement. It's probably because anyone could pull up a text editor and create a simple website within a day, but writing a game is, without exaggerating, the hardest thing to do in the entire world of programming. And for that reason, it is a huge reward when you actually finish a game project.

The Solution

My plan now? Finish off these few websites I have commission for creating. I do, after all, have deadlines to keep. After that I need to focus my time on games again. But there remains just one question…

What kind of game?
